How we collect, process, store, and share your data when you use our services
2025/03/10
Introduction
Welcome to the Privacy Policy of Saladict. This document explains in detail how we collect, process, store, and share your information when you use our browser extension, our website, and related services.
We are committed to protecting your privacy. Saladict is designed to process most of your data locally in your browser. We do not sell your personal data, and we only process the information necessary to provide and improve our services.
This policy applies to:
- The Saladict browser extension
- Our website and its related services
- Any related applications and services we operate
Information We Collect
We collect the minimum amount of information required to provide our services. The information we may collect falls into the following categories:
1. Information You Provide Directly
- Contact information: If you contact us, sign up, or submit feedback, we may collect your name and email address to respond to you.
- Translation service API keys: If you choose to configure third-party translation services (such as DeepL, Baidu, Google, OpenAI, etc.), the API keys you provide are stored locally in your browser only. They are never uploaded to our servers, even when data synchronization is enabled.
- Word lists and history: The word lists and lookup history you create are stored locally in your browser.
2. Information Processed to Provide the Service
- Text for translation: When you use the lookup or translation features, we send only the text you have selected to the third-party translation service you have configured. We never send this text to any unrelated third party.
- Clipboard content: The extension only reads your clipboard when you actively use the clipboard lookup feature, and only reads the text you have selected. From version 8.12.0 onwards, clipboard permission is disabled by default and is only requested when needed. You can revoke this permission at any time in the extension settings under "Permission Management".
3. What We Do Not Collect
We are transparent about what we do not collect. When you use our website or extension, we do not collect:
- IP addresses
- Usage analytics such as pages visited, time spent, or interaction tracking
- Device information such as browser type or operating system
- Any tracking or profiling data used to identify or follow you across the web
We only collect the personal identity information (such as your name and email address) that you choose to provide when contacting us.
How We Collect Your Information
- Directly from you: When you register, contact us, or submit information.
- From your browser: When you use the extension, information is processed locally on your device.
We do not collect information automatically, and we do not use cookies or similar tracking technologies to collect personal data.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information for the following purposes:
- To provide, operate, and maintain our services and extension features
- To process your translation and lookup requests
- To notify you about changes to our services
- To provide customer support and respond to your inquiries
- To detect, prevent, and address technical issues, security, and abuse
We do not use your personal information for any commercial purpose unrelated to the operation of our services.
How We Store Your Information
Local Storage
The majority of your data is stored locally on your device in your browser:
- API keys for third-party translation services
- Word lists, lookup history, and extension settings
- Clipboard text, only while processing a lookup request
Cloud Storage
Your data is stored in the cloud only if you explicitly choose to enable synchronization:
- Browser synchronization: If you are logged into your browser account, your settings may sync through your browser's cloud storage. This is controlled by your browser, not by us.
- WebDAV and third-party word platforms: If you enable two-way or one-way synchronization (for example, with WebDAV servers, or word platforms such as Eudic or Shanbay), your word lists will be synchronized to those servers or platforms according to your configuration.
We do not operate a general-purpose cloud storage service for your word lists unless you configure synchronization to one of the above services.
Data Retention
We retain the information necessary to operate our services only for as long as required to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, to comply with legal obligations, or to resolve disputes. Local data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the extension.
How We Share Your Information
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to any third party. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- Translation service providers: When you request a translation or lookup, we send only the selected text to the third-party translation service you have configured, solely for the purpose of fulfilling your request. These providers process the data under their own terms and privacy policies.
- Legal compliance: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect our rights, safety, or property.
Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Because the majority of your data is stored locally on your device, you also play an important role in protecting your data by keeping your browser and device secure.
While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your data, please note that no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure.
Your Privacy Rights and Controls
You have control over your data in the following ways:
- Local data: You can view, export, or delete your word lists, history, and settings at any time using the extension's import/export and data management features.
- Clipboard permission: You can enable or disable clipboard access at any time in the extension settings under "Permission Management".
- Synchronization: You can enable or disable data synchronization at any time. Disabling it stops future synchronization.
- Access and deletion: You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of any personal data we hold about you by contacting us.
Children's Privacy
Our services are not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child, please contact us so we can delete it.
Third-Party Services and Links
Our services may contain links to third-party websites, and the extension integrates with third-party translation services. These third parties have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party service you use.
International Data Transfers
If you use translation services or synchronization features that operate servers outside your country of residence, your selected text or word lists may be transferred to and processed in those locations. We take reasonable steps to ensure that such transfers are conducted securely and in accordance with applicable law.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information.
